Description

This handbound leather book includes French Literature from 1900.  Caution was used to sewn these fragile pages together.  It documents the turn of the century “Exposition Universelle” in this Paris World’s Fair Book.

The cover features a Paris Metro entrance.  Architect Hector Guimard designed the Metro entrance for the 1900 World Exposition.  The Paris World’s Fair Book focuses on this Art Nouveau art piece.  The Metro design is carved from 10 layers of binders board.  Therefore, many levels create a vivid three-dimensional relief.

Guimard’s Art Nouveau style is repeated with the organic design under black leather near the spine.

“Paris World’s Fair” lettering features an Art Nouveau style.  First, I handcarved each letter.  Next, it was embossed under olive green lambskin.  Likewise, “1900” is embossed on the Paris Metro entrance under suede gold leather.

The original documents for the book were highly fragile.  Therefore, extensions were glued onto each individual page to widen them. Consequently, this allowed for the pages to be stitched together through the new strong paper edges at the spine.

The five binding cords extend from the spine into the front and back covers.  Smooth black leather wraps over them.

Coversheets feature ‘Acanthus Scroll’ linen fabric, recreated from an authentic 1900 design.

Handstitched headbands pull the green theme onto the spine ends. Chartreuse suede and copper wire add a visual accent between the main leathers.

A black leather clamshell box acccompanies the Paris Metro art nouveau book.
