Description
This Art Nouveau Botanical Book contains the Grasset Portfolio. It features a rare 48 plate version of M. Eugene Grasset’s “La Plante”. The Art Book has been leather bound to feature handcarved and embossed versions of its contents on the covers.
BOTANICAL DESIGN:
Each page showcases one botanical print. Specifically, 48 prints are mounted on the archival pages and feature stylized geometric botanical adaptations. The beautiful prints became inspiration for cover art. Three botanical prints were referenced and represented on the covers.
Firstly, a Celery Pillar has been carved in great detail and depth. Then smooth moss green lambskin was embossed over the sculpture one half inch at a time. Copper accents cap the design.
Secondly, the burgundy border features a long detail of stylized Bryony plant. It is again hand carved in deep detail and covered in leather. Silver beads highlight the Bryony Art Nouveau design, which is framed between two thick lines of copper wire.
Thirdly, on the back cover of the Grasset book can be seen three carved branches of a Sorb plant, also featured in the Art Nouveau 48 prints. The back cover features dark green deerskin. This green coordinates with the two vertical stripes along the Bryony seen on the front cover.
BOOKBINDING DETAILS:
The rich brown leather spine covers five binding cords. Green handmade paper lines the inner covers as endsheets. Markedly, these decorative endsheets feature an Art Nouveau botanical pattern in metallic gold.
The 48 prints were originally loose, contained in a red linen portfolio box. The original gold stamped title on the portfolio box, “La Plante 48 Planches”, accents to the inner cover as a highlight. Also, this retains and showcases a treasured part of the original box.
To ensure heirloom quality, a double layer of 55 pound tensile strength fabric reinforces the cover hinges, applied with archival permanently flexible glue.
The headbands, stitched directly into the spine ends, are comprised of leather cords wrapped with thread and sewn directly through the binding for added strength.
